Where to Plan a Trip in Albania: Cities and Coasts

46 guides

Tirana is where most Albania trips start, and its one-day route on foot links Skanderbeg Square, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, Bunk'Art 2 and the Pyramid before lunch in Blloku. Add a second day for the New Bazaar, and a third for Krujë Castle or Dajti National Park. Berat and Gjirokastër reward similar planning: an early castle climb at Berat before the Onufri Museum, and in Gjirokastër the castle at dawn, the Old Bazaar at midday and the Manalat viewpoints at dusk.

The coast runs on different timing. Saranda's promenade belongs to the morning, beach clubs to the afternoon and Lëkurësi Castle to sunset; Ksamil orders its days around the islands, Plazhi Ksamilit and a Butrint trip, with the Sarandë bus and Corfu ferry shaping the schedule. Vlorë spreads along the Lungomare, Himarë along a flat promenade from Spile to Potami, and Durrës splits cleanly between the old town and the Vollga seafront.

What catches visitors out is scale: in Gjirokastër, the twenty-minute climb to the castle; in Korçë, a plateau town at around 850 metres. Maps count for more than lists here.

Berat

  • Berat Itinerary: Deciding 1–3 Days in Berat

A practical Berat itinerary split by side of the river: an early castle climb and the Onufri Museum on day one, the Gorica Bridge and Mangalem on day two, and the Osumi Canyons on day three, with walking times, heat advice and where to eat.

  • Berat Map: How the Old Town, Castle and Gorica Fit Together

Berat reads easily once you see it as four pieces: the castle hill, Mangalem below it, Gorica across the Osum, and the modern lower town along Rruga Antipatrea. This guide pins the main sights to each quarter and explains how to walk between them.

  • Berat Viewpoints: Which Views to Choose in Berat

Berat's classic view is free and easy: the panoramic viewpoint beside the suspension bridge looks straight across at Mangalem's stacked Ottoman windows above the Osum. This guide covers that spot, the steep cobbled climb to Berat Castle, the quieter Gorica bank, the Gorica ruins hill and a street-level option on Boulevard Republika.

  • Shopping in Berat: Souvenirs, Crafts and Local Shops

Berat's best buys are the things made in the city: hand-carved wood and textiles sold inside Berat Castle and in Mangalem, plus crafts and local produce in the centre. This guide covers which shops sit where, what the daily listings say, how the cobbled climbs shape a shopping trip and how to pay.

Dhërmi

  • Dhërmi Map: Old Village, Beaches and Coves Explained

A Dhërmi map shows two places wearing one name: a stone village on the mountainside and a pebble coastline below it. This guide explains where the old lanes, Dhërmi Beach, Drymades, Gjipe and the SH8 sit in relation to each other.

Durrës

  • Durrës Map: Old Town, Castle and Main Sights Laid Out

Durrës reads best on a map as two layers: a compact old town behind the harbour holding the castle, the amphitheatre and the Roman baths, and the long seafront boulevard running out to the beach strip. Plot those first, add the transport points, and the rest of the city falls into place.

  • Durrës Market: What's Sold and How to Visit the Bazaar

Durrës market, often simply called the bazaar, is a working food market of figs, olives, herbs, honey and cheese rather than a souvenir souk. It is best treated as one stop in a morning of old-town sightseeing rather than a destination in its own right.

  • Durrës Promenade: The Vollga Seafront Walk and What's on It

Shëtitorja Vollga is Durrës's seafront promenade and urban park, a waterfront walk rather than a single ticketed sight. Here is how to pace it, what the Sfinksi platform actually is, and how to pair the seafront with the amphitheatre, museum and Venetian Tower inland.

  • Shopping in Durrës: Malls, Boutiques and Souvenir Shops

Shopping in Durrës centres on one main mall, a handful of smaller indoor centres and a spread of street-level boutiques and gift shops. Here is where each cluster sits, the hours the shops publish, and how to fit browsing around the old-town sights.

Elbasan

  • Elbasan Map: Finding the Old Town, Castle and Bus Station

An Elbasan map shows the town's position in central Albania and the grid of streets around the old town. This guide explains how to read one for a visit, how scale turns into walking time, and how to check your map against live traffic before you set off.

Gjirokastër

  • Gjirokastër Itinerary: One, Two or Three Days in the Stone City

Two days covers Gjirokastër properly: the castle early, the Old Bazaar and its mosque at midday, an Ottoman house in the afternoon and the Manalat viewpoints at dusk. This itinerary sets out a one-day version, a fuller two days and a third day for Antigonea or the Blue Eye.

  • Gjirokaster Map: Old Town, Castle and Main Sights

A working map of Gjirokastër: the castle on its ridge, the stone old town on the slope below, the bazaar at its heart, and the steep twenty-minute climb that catches visitors out.

  • Gjirokastër Sunset: Where to Watch It and How to Time It

The castle terrace gives the widest view over the bazaar and the Drino valley, while the Obelisk suits a lower, town-level last light. Here is how the two spots differ, what the castle charges in lek, and how to time the climb on foot.

Himarë

Korçë

  • Korçë Map for Visitors: Old Town, Bazaar and Main Sights

Korçë sits on a plateau at around 850 metres, ringed by the Morava Mountains. This guide reads the map for you: where the pedestrian core and bazaar sit, how the main square and cathedral orient you, which museums cluster for one walking loop, and what needs a car or taxi. It also explains where Korçë falls on a map of Albania and which map sources to trust before you arrive.

Krujë

  • Krujë Map for Visitors: Old Town, Castle and Bazaar Layout

Krujë's sights stack in three layers: the bazaar street, the castle above it and the modern town below. This map guide names the streets that matter, explains what sits inside the castle walls, and places Fushë-Krujë and the surrounding villages in relation to the centre.

Ksamil

  • Ksamil Itinerary: How to Plan One to Three Days

Ksamil works best as a short, ordered stay: islands and Plazhi Ksamilit on day one, Butrint on day two, a day trip on day three. This itinerary sets out the timings, the Saranda bus, the Corfu ferry and how the summer beach clubs change the plan.

  • Ksamil Map: Village, Beaches and Islands

A Ksamil map is simple once you see the shape of the place: one main road, a narrow village strip and the sea, with the islands just offshore. This guide lays out the central, north and south beaches, where the Sarandë bus and taxis drop you, and how map distances translate into walking.

  • Ksamil Sunset: Where to Watch It and How to Time It

Ksamil looks west, so the sunset is a coastline-wide event rather than a single secret spot. Plan your evening around a west-facing beach, the southern coves, the walk between them, a hilltop castle above Saranda or a boat out to the islands.

  • Ksamil Viewpoints: Which Ones for Coast and Island Views

Ksamil's views come from two directions: the town beach looking out at the Four Islands, and the southern beaches looking back north. The road from Sarandë gives a passing sweep of the bay on the way in. Here is how to reach each and when to go for golden hour.

Pogradec

  • Pogradec Promenade: The Lakeside Walk on Lake Ohrid

The Pogradec promenade is a flat lakeside walk along the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid, lined with cafés, restaurants and hotels. Walk it in the evening, continue to the old town and Golik Bridge on one side, and head out to Drilon and Tushemisht on the other.

Sarandë

  • Free Things to Do in Saranda: 9 No-Cost Sights and Walks

Saranda's best no-cost day is a loop of the promenade, the synagogue ruins, the farmers market and a hilltop sunset. Here is what costs nothing, what takes how long, and which nearby sights carry a fee.

  • Saranda Itinerary: One, Two or Three Days in Saranda

Build a Saranda itinerary around clock time rather than a list: promenade in the morning, beaches and beach clubs in the afternoon, sunset at Lëkurësi Castle, then Butrint and Ksamil on day two and the Blue Eye on day three.

  • Saranda Map: How the Town Fits Together for Visitors

Use the Saranda map to fix the town in your head before you set out: where the gulf of the Ionian Sea lies, how the seafront relates to the streets behind it, and when the town's own digital map beats a phone app.

  • Saranda Market: What's Sold, Where to Find It and When

Saranda has no single covered bazaar. The town's market shopping splits into a central farmers' market on Rruga Jonianet, souvenir shops and craft sellers along the promenade, and supermarket-style shops on Rruga Butrinti. This guide explains what each offers, how to pay, and when to go.

  • Saranda Promenade: A Guide to the Seafront Walk

The Saranda promenade is a flat, pedestrian seafront boulevard facing the Ionian Sea, with cafés, seafood restaurants and market stalls along its length. Allow an hour for the walk, then use it as the base for the synagogue ruins, Lëkurësi Castle above town and onward trips to Butrint and Ksamil.

  • Saranda Viewpoint: Lëkurësi Castle and Bay Overlooks

Saranda's views split into two kinds: the hilltop panorama at Lëkurësi Castle, reached on foot or by taxi, and the flat sea-level outlooks along the promenade. This guide covers what each one shows, how to reach it and how much time to allow.

  • Shopping in Saranda: Supermarkets, Big Market and Shops

Shopping in Saranda means groceries, beach provisions and a handful of fashion and gift shops rather than a bazaar quarter. Here is where the supermarkets and shops are, which trip each one suits, and how to fit a short shopping run around the rest of your stay.

Shkodër

Tirana

  • Free Things to Do in Tirana: Squares, Streets and City Walks

Tirana's free day is built on squares, streets and façades: Skanderbeg Square with its mosque and clock tower, the Opera steps, Blloku's avenues, the New Old Bazaar and both cathedrals. Add a pay-what-you-wish walking tour if you want a guide, and treat the House of Leaves, Bunk'Art and the cable car as paid extras.

  • One Day in Tirana: A Walkable Itinerary for the Essentials

One day in Tirana fits the essentials: Skanderbeg Square, Et'hem Bey Mosque, Bunk'Art 2, the Pyramid, lunch and Blloku, all on foot. This route puts them in a sensible order, flags the half-day add-ons on the city edge and says what to drop if you only have half a day.

  • Shopping in Tirana: Markets, Malls and What to Buy

Shopping in Tirana splits into three habits: the New Bazaar and street markets for produce and everyday goods, air-conditioned centres for international brands, and small shops for Albanian crafts. This guide covers where each one is, when to go, what to buy and how to pay.

  • Things to Do in Tirana When It Rains: Indoor Picks

Wet days are the minority in Tirana, so a rainy-day plan is a backup rather than the default. Pick one anchor sight, add a sheltered square or shopping centre nearby, and you fill an afternoon without crossing the city twice.

  • Tirana Itinerary: How to Plan One, Two or Three Days

Plan a Tirana itinerary by day and by block: a walkable centre loop for day one, Bunk'Art 2 and the New Bazaar for day two, and Krujë Castle or Dajti National Park when you have a third day.

  • Tirana Lake Park: the Grand Park and Artificial Lake

Tirana Lake Park is the Grand Park of Tirana, a huge green space built around the artificial lake south of the centre. Allow about an hour for the roughly 5km loop on foot, walk in from the end of Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard and go late for sunset.

  • Tirana Map for Visitors: Old Town, Castle and Main Sights

A Tirana map is easiest to use once you separate the built-up centre you will walk from the wider municipality that stretches out to villages and mountains. This guide explains the eleven neighbourhoods, the bordering towns, map formats and how to orient yourself on arrival.

  • Tirana Market Guide: Pazari i Ri & Cham Market Picks

Tirana's markets split neatly into three jobs: Pazari i Ri for produce, cheese, honey and street food; Tregu i Çamëve for clothing and household goods; and the city's secondhand stalls for vintage clothes. Here is what each one sells, when to go and how to pay.

  • Tirana Sunset Guide: Rooftops, the Pyramid and the Lake

The easiest Tirana sunset needs no climb: stand on Skanderbeg Square or walk the shore at Tirana Lake Park as the light drops. The Pyramid gives you a short, steep stair climb with a city view, and the Dajti cable car puts you above the basin entirely. Time your evening around the day's actual sunset, which moves noticeably between September and October.

  • Tirana with Kids: How Long Each Family Sight Takes

Tirana suits families best as a short, walkable day: start on Skanderbeg Square, climb the Clock Tower, dip into a museum when it is hot or wet, then finish in the Grand Park or up on Dajti Mountain. This guide groups the stops as a route and splits them by age suitability.

Vlorë

  • Lungomare Vlorë: The Seafront Promenade Guide

Vlorë's Lungomare is a seafront walk with a sandy public beach along it, lined with restaurants, cafés and kiosks. Here is how to use the promenade and the beach in one outing, when it gets crowded and what to combine it with.

  • Vlorë Map: Old Town, Castle and Waterfront Layout

A Vlorë map is an orientation tool first: it shows a coastal city in southern Albania where the port and waterfront, the old town and the hill above sit in relation to each other. This guide explains how to read that layout, why an offline map and a satellite view do different jobs, and which map details to check before you arrive.

  • Vlorë Market: Food, Produce and Live Animal Markets

Vlorë has no single market hall to tick off: the live animal trade runs on Rruga Nikolla Xhuveli, produce comes from neighbourhood stalls and grocery shops, and seafood is sold beside the boat that landed it. Here is which market answers your question and how to reach it.

  • Vlorë Sunset: Timing and Where to Watch

Sun tables give the sunset hour and day length in Vlorë for any date, and the timing of the evening shifts through the year. A two-hour sunset boat tour in Vlorë County runs from either of two start times.

Country-wide guides

  • Albania Map: Decide Regions, Towns and Routes

An Albania map makes most sense read in three bands: the northern mountains and lakes, the central corridor around Tirana, and the southern Ottoman towns and Riviera. This guide groups the main places by how the country's shape routes you, names the roads and coastlines that link them, and shows where the Lake Komani ferry and the Butrint waterways change the plan.

  • Albanian Souvenirs: What to Buy and What to Skip

The souvenirs that travel best are the edible and drinkable ones: sealed olive oil, a bottle of raki or wine from indigenous grapes, and boxed sweets such as bakllava. Fresh byrek and petulla are for eating there, and for craft, ask the stall who made the piece before you buy.
