Riviera and Coast: Albania's Ionian and Adriatic Shorelines
24 guides
The Riviera is densest between Dhërmi and Lukovë, where the SH8 threads stone villages set above pebble coves. Himarë sits at the centre of it, with Qeparo, Borsh, Piqeras and Vuno strung either side, and Llogara Pass at 1,027 m marking the climb down from Vlorë into the whole strip.
Vlorë leans to the water rather than the villages: the Karaburun Peninsula has no road to its coves, so Grama Bay and Haxhi Ali Cave are reached by boat, while Sazan Island runs as a guided half-day trip. South around Ksamil, four rocky islets and the Butrint lagoon pull the same stretch of coast in a quieter direction.
What trips people up is distance and access. Dhermi and Qeparo each split between a hill village and a shoreline below, and the quietest stops on the northern Adriatic — Narta Lagoon, the Cape of Rodon near Lezhë, Divjakë-Karavasta at Fier — reward drivers who plan the detours.
Dhërmi
- Dhermi, Albania: Old Village, Coast and How to Get There
Dhermi is two places in one: a stone village on the mountain road and a pebble coastline a few hundred metres below it. This guide separates the two, explains how to get between them, sets out the driving distances from Vlorë, Sarandë and Tirana, and shows how to slot the village into a Riviera route without losing a day to the wrong beach.
Fier
- Divjaka National Park Guide: What to See in Fier
Divjakë-Karavasta National Park is a flat, open wetland on Albania's Adriatic coast, built around the Karavasta Lagoon and its Dalmatian pelicans. Here is how the lagoons, pine forest and dunes fit together, how to approach from Tirana, Durrës or Lushnja, and how to plan a half-day or full day around the trails, hides and boat trips.
- Karavasta Lagoon: Visiting Divjakë-Karavasta National Park
The Karavasta Lagoon is the brackish heart of Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, backed by Divjaka pine forest and a long sand barrier on the Adriatic. This guide covers where it sits, how to drive in from Tirana, Durrës or Lushnja, what to do at the visitor centre, birdwatching tower and trails, when boat trips and breeding-season closures matter, and how long to allow.
Himarë

Here is what each stretch gives you, how to arrive via Corfu or Tirana, and how the winding coast road changes your plans.
- Albanian Riviera Itinerary: A Day-by-Day Coastal Plan
A workable Albanian Riviera itinerary runs north to south along one coastal road: Llogara Pass and Dhermi first, then Gjipe, Jale and Himare, then Porto Palermo, Borsh and Saranda, with Butrint, Ksamil and the Blue Eye as the southern day. Here is how to order the stops, which stretches reward a car, and what to drop when you only have two or three days.
- Albanian Riviera Map: Where the Coast Runs and What Sits Where
The Albanian Riviera map is a roughly 100 km strip of Ionian coast running from Palasë in the north to Lukovë in the south. This guide fixes the main towns, the road that threads them and the inland spurs at Butrint and the Blue Eye, so you can plan a route rather than guess at pins.
- Borsh, Albania: The Village, the Castle and the Coast
Borsh is a Riviera village in Lukovë with a long white-gravel bay below and a hilltop stronghold above, olive groves in between. Plan the climb and the swim in that order, allow most of a day, and slot it between Qeparo and Sarandë on the coastal road.
- Llogara Pass: Where It Is and How to Drive It
Llogara Pass is the 1,027 m crossing of the Ceraunian Mountains on the SH8 highway, the road link between Vlorë and the Riviera beaches. Here is how the climb and the hairpin descent work, what waits at the summit, when to drive it and how long to allow.
- Lukovë, Albanian Riviera: What to See and How to Get There
Lukovë is a small Riviera settlement set above the Ionian Sea, with a pebbly beach below and a handful of village lanes and landmarks above it. This guide covers where it sits between Sarandë and Himarë, how the beach is laid out, what to combine nearby and how long to allow.

Piqeras is a hillside village in Vlorë County, southern Albania, inland from the Ionian coast between Borsh and Qeparo. This guide covers where it sits, how to arrive by car or minibus, the church and monastery above the village, the walk down to Bunec, and how to slot it into a Riviera day.
- Qeparo, Albania: Upper and Lower Village Guide
Qeparo is two places in one: Old Qeparo, a stone village on the hill, and the beach settlement on the coast road below. This guide separates the two, explains how to reach each, how long to allow and which nearby stops pair well with a visit.
- Vuno, Albania: the Riviera Village in Himarë Municipality
Vuno is a village in the municipality of Himarë, Vlorë County, in southern Albania, and its population is exclusively composed of Orthodox Albanians. This guide sets out what the evidence supports about the village, how it relates to Himarë, and what to confirm locally before you travel.
Ksamil
- Butrint Lagoon: Lake Butrint, the Vivari Channel and the Ruins
Butrint lagoon is the shallow water that wraps the ancient city: Lake Butrint on one side, the Vivari Channel carrying it to the Ionian Sea, and reed beds, walls and gates along the shore. Here is how the water, the ruins and the furgon or car-ferry journey fit together.
- Ksamil Islands: How to Visit Albania's Four Islets
The Ksamil Islands are four rocky islets sitting just off Ksamil village on the Ionian Sea, inside Butrint National Park. Here is how to reach them, when to go, how long to allow and what to pair with a day on the water.
Lezhë
- Cape of Rodon: Skanderbeg's Castle, St Anthony's Church and How to Get There
The Cape of Rodon (Kepi i Rodonit) is a rocky Adriatic peninsula north of Durrës, reached by car in about an hour and holding a ruined 15th-century castle, St Anthony's Church and a small beach. Here is how the site is laid out, where to swim along the peninsula, and what the walk and the ranger fee involve.
- Shengjin, Albania: What to See and How Long You Need
Shengjin works as a low-key coastal base in Lezhë County: a 3 km seafront, calm shallow water in the central stretch, the Kune-Vain lagoon and reserve behind the town, and Lezhë with its castle half an hour inland. Give it a day for the beach and promenade, or two if you want the lagoon and the old town.
Vlorë
- Karaburun Peninsula Guide: Boat or Hike Vlore
The Karaburun Peninsula rewards two very different trips: a boat day to caves and drop-off beaches, or a long, exposed walk in from Orikum to Bristani and Skaloma bays. This guide covers where it is, how to reach it, which bays to aim for and how long to allow.
- Dukat, Albania: Where It Is and What to Expect
Dukat is a small village in Vlorë County in southern Albania, part of the Labëria region. It is a working settlement in the hills above the Vlora coast rather than a ticketed sight, so plan it as a short stop on a wider day out rather than a destination in its own right.
- Grama Bay, Albania: How to Reach the Bay by Boat or on Foot
Grama Bay is a pebble cove on the southern Karaburun Peninsula with no road to it. You reach it by boat from Himarë or on a long walk from Palasë. Here is how the two routes compare, which caves and stops a boat trip strings together, and why the cliffs are carved with sailors' inscriptions.
- Haxhi Ali Cave: visiting the Karaburun sea cave by boat
Haxhi Ali Cave is a 30-metre sea cave in the limestone cliffs of the Karaburun Peninsula, reached only by boat from the Vlorë side. This guide covers what the cave looks like inside, how surface boat trips and scuba dives differ, how long the crossing takes and how the cave fits a marine-park day.
- Narta Lagoon: Flamingos, Zvërnec Island and How to Visit
Narta Lagoon spreads across shallow water, saltpans and dunes just north of the Bay of Vlorë, with a wooden footbridge to Zvërnec Island and its monastery. Here is how the lagoon road works for birding, when spring and autumn migration matter, and how the protected landscape shapes a visit.
- Sazan Island, Albania: Vlore Guide to Visit Military Island
Sazan Island is a half-day boat trip from Vlorë, not a stand-alone destination: guided tours only, a pine-lined path through abandoned barracks and bunkers, and coves you see from the water.
- Uji i Ftohtë, Tepelenë: Springs, Waterfalls and How to Visit
Uji i Ftohtë is a roadside spring and waterfall stop in the Drinos valley, 8km south of Tepelenë on the Gjirokastër road, with a bar and restaurant alongside. Allow 20 minutes for photos and a coffee, or an hour for a proper meal.

- Albania Islands: Sazan, the Ksamil Islets and Lake Settings
Albania has one Adriatic island worth planning around, Sazan off Vlorë, a scatter of small islets in the Ksamil bay, and lake and wetland settings at Zvërnec, Lake Shkodra and Lake Koman. Sazan has been reached on organised speedboat landings of around thirty minutes; the islets and lakes are scenery, swimming and crossings rather than island stops.
