Bajram Curri: Gateway Town to the Albanian Alps
Bajram Curri is the main town of the Tropojë district in northern Albania. Here is what it is, how travellers reach it and what sits around it in the Albanian Alps.
On this page
Treat Bajram Curri as a transit base for the Albanian Alps, not as a sight in itself. Although most published descriptions focus on the mountains, a stop here lets you break up the long road towards Theth, Valbona or the Komani Lake crossing. This guide sets out where the town sits, how its name appears on maps and timetables, and which onward routes are worth building a day around.
What Bajram Curri is and where it sits in the Albanian Alps
Bajram Curri is a town in northern Albania, named after Bajram Curri, an Albanian chieftain, politician and activist who fought for the country's independence. It stands in the mountain country that leads towards the Albanian Alps.
Approach it as a road junction with beds and supplies rather than a place with an old quarter to wander. Arriving late in the afternoon leaves you time to sort food and cash before a morning departure into the mountains, which is how most travellers use it. From here the roads run north and west towards the valleys and villages covered elsewhere in this guide.

Bajram Curri and Tropojë: which name you will see on signs and maps
Expect both names in circulation. Bajram Curri is the town; Tropojë is the wider district around it, so a timetable or map label may refer to either without meaning the same thing. When you book transport or ask directions, say whether you mean the town itself or somewhere out in the Tropojë district.
The town also sits within Kukës County, which is how some travel listings group it. Check the county label when you search accommodation or read a map index, because results filed under Kukës County include places well outside Bajram Curri itself.

The town as a base for Theth, Valbona and the Komani Lake crossing
Bajram Curri earns its place in an Albanian Alps itinerary by what surrounds it. Theth lies to the south-west, the Valbona Valley to the north-east, and the Komani Lake crossing is the watery route that many travellers use to link the two. None of these is in the town, so plan Bajram Curri as the night before or after rather than the day out.
Use the town for the practical jobs that mountain villages cannot always handle: a proper shop, a fuller choice of beds and a chance to reorganise luggage before a stretch on foot. Then commit the daylight hours to the valleys themselves, where the walking and the views are.
Thethi Waterfall (Grunas Waterfall): a 25 m natural monument about 30 minutes' walk from Theth village
The waterfall that most people pair with this corner of the Alps is the Thethi Waterfall, also called the Grunas Waterfall. It stands about 25 metres high, is protected as a natural monument, and sits roughly a 30-minute walk from Theth village. That short approach makes it an easy addition to a day in the valley rather than a separate expedition.
Allow more than the walking time itself. The return is on mountain ground, so start early enough to be back in daylight and check the day's conditions before setting out. Read our guide to the Grunas Waterfall in Theth before you go so you know what the approach involves.
Vermosh: Albania's northernmost village, in the Kelmend region of Malësi e Madhe
Vermosh is Albania's northernmost village, in the Kelmend region within the municipality of Malësi e Madhe, surrounded by the Albanian Alps. It is known for wild scenery, clean water sources and the traditions of its inhabitants, and it draws visitors for mountain walking and for local food. It sits in a different administrative corner from Bajram Curri, so treat it as a separate leg of the trip rather than a suburb.
Because Vermosh belongs to Malësi e Madhe, transport and maps for it will not always list Tropojë at all. If you are linking Bajram Curri with Vermosh, work out the road sequence before you commit, and read our separate guide to planning the drive north to Vermosh for the detail.
Crossing towards Montenegro: Vusanje and the drive north from Tirana
An eight-day guided Albanian Alps trip sold by Intrepid Travel leaves Tirana and heads north through the countryside, stopping at the Mrizi i Zanave agrotourism farm near Fishtë for brunch, then continues into Montenegro to stay at Vusanje. The same itinerary later takes in the Theth to Valbona trail and a boat ride across Komani Lake. Those stops belong to one operator's schedule, not to public transport, so do not plan around them unless you book that trip.
Independent travellers heading for the Montenegro border from Tirana face a long drive, with the road north passing through mountain country rather than motorway. Break the journey rather than pushing straight through, and treat Bajram Curri as one of the natural stopping points on that line.
The Komani Lake boat crossing as part of an organised Albanian Alps itinerary
The Komani Lake crossing is one of the most distinctive legs of an Alps trip: a boat through steep-sided water rather than another stretch of road. On the Intrepid itinerary it is one element of a walking-focused eight-day programme that also includes the Volusnica ridge and Rosni peak.
On the Intrepid itinerary the boat is one leg of a fixed schedule, so confirm sailing days and departure points before you build a route around it. Our Lake Koman Ferry guide explains how the crossing fits together with the road sections at either end.
How long to give Bajram Curri, and what the town lacks for a short stop
Give Bajram Curri a night, or two if you are regrouping between mountain legs. That is enough for supplies, a meal and a bed, and it keeps your daylight for the valleys. A short stop also lets you reach the mountains without losing a day to the road.
What the town does not offer is the thing most visitors came north for: the walking itself. The trails, the waterfall and the lake are all reached from elsewhere, which is why a short stop works better than a long one. If your priority is the mountains, take our guide to the Albanian Alps as the framework and slot Bajram Curri in as the hinge.
Which onward leg to fix first
Settle the Komani Lake crossing before anything else, because the boat runs to a timetable and the rest of the route bends around it. Once that date is fixed, put Bajram Curri on the night before or after, and let Theth and the Valbona Valley sit on either side.
If the lake is not part of your plan, build the trip around a single mountain base instead and use the town only to break the drive. Either way, keep the town's role modest and spend your time where the mountains are.
