Lake Koman Ferry Guide: Boats, Crossing and Theth Access
How the Lake Koman ferry works: the Koman to Fierzë crossing, journey time, season, booking ahead, reaching the dock from Shkodër or Tirana, and links to Valbona.
On this page
The Lake Koman ferry is a boat crossing between the Koman dam landing and Fierzë, running through a steep gorge on the Drin in northern Albania. Most travellers use it as the first leg of the journey towards Valbona and the Albanian Alps, not as a destination on its own. This guide covers the two-and-a-half-hour crossing, the car ferry and excursion boats that share the water, the SH25 road to the dock, and the onward connection from Fierzë.
Where the ferry runs
Lake Komani is the reservoir behind the Koman dam on the Drin, stretching 34 kilometres between the Fierza and Vau-Deja dams. At its narrowest the gorge is about 50 metres wide, with rock walls rising close to the water. The ferry route crosses this section between the Koman landing, reached by road from Shkodër via Vau-Deja, and Fierzë at the far end.
Fierzë is the practical end point for most passengers. From there the road runs on towards Valbona in the Albanian Alps, which is why the crossing sits inside a longer journey rather than at its end. If you are reading up on the wider region before you book, our guide to the Albanian Alps explains how the lake fits into a northern Albania itinerary.

How long the crossing takes
Allow around two and a half hours on the water. Komani Lake Ferry describes the ferry journey as taking roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the vessel and weather conditions. On the way you pass cliffs, waterfalls after rain and small mountain settlements along the shore.
Shorter boat trips are a separate service. Speedboats run from the lake towards the Shala River and cut the journey time, which suits travellers who want the river rather than the full crossing. Decide which you want before booking: the car ferry is transport, while the speedboat is an excursion.
When the ferry runs and which boats operate
The car ferry Berisha is the main vehicle service on the route. Fares are limited, and Komani Lake Ferry's own timetable lists a 09:00 departure from Koman and a 13:00 departure from Fierzë; the ferry is widely reported to run through the warmer months between roughly April and November, so confirm the sailing for your date. Space on board is limited, so booking ahead matters if you are bringing a car.
Alongside the car ferry, excursion boats work the lake and the Shala River, and some operators sell lake tours, kayak trips and speedboat tours as separate products. Confirm the departure you intend to take with the company you book with. Our page on Fierzë: the Komani Lake ferry port in northern Albania covers the far landing in more detail.
Booking ahead and what to have ready
The crossing is popular between May and September, and Komani Lake Ferry advises booking several days in advance in summer. Many travellers reserve the ferry and the road transfer together, which removes the job of matching a minibus to a sailing. Keep your booking confirmation to hand at the landing.
Arrive at the departure point early, and aim to be at the landing at least 30 minutes before departure. Bring cash for small purchases, a light jacket for the water, and a power bank for a day that starts before dawn. Check the price for your date when you reserve.
Getting to the Koman dock by road
By road the approach is from Shkodër via Vau-Deja on the SH25. The 35 kilometres from Vau-Deja to the ferry terminal can take an hour or more, because the surface is broken, potholes are common and rockfall happens. Allow extra time if you plan to catch the 09:00 sailing.
The last stretch to the landing passes through a single-lane tunnel controlled by traffic lights, which holds vehicles back while the arriving ferry unloads. The Lake Koman Ferry address is listed as Koman on the SH25, which is enough to find it on a map. If you are driving yourself, treat the road, not the sailing, as the part of the day most likely to run late.

Arriving by transfer or minibus
Dedicated transfers run from Tirana and from Shkodër to the Koman landing, timed to meet the morning ferry. Shkodër is the closer base of the two for an early start. Typical transfer fares are quoted at 50 euros from Tirana and 12 euros from Shkodër; confirm the figure for your date when you book.
Komani Lake Ferry lists its pickup services with times, including Tirana to Koman at 05:30 and Shkodër to Koman at 07:00, plus return runs from Koman in the late afternoon. Times like these are set by the company and change with the season, so confirm yours when you reserve rather than relying on a printed list.
From Fierzë onward to Valbona
From Fierzë the road continues south towards Valbona, and transfers can be arranged to meet the ferry on arrival. Operators list a Fierzë to Valbona run at 12:00 and a Valbona to Fierzë run at 10:30, which is how the crossing links into the valleys. The Valbona Valley guide covers what the valley offers once you are there.
The lake is also the usual first stage of the route to Theth for travellers coming from the north. Our Theth guide sets out the road and transport options at that end. If you are heading that way, book the Fierzë connection before you leave Koman rather than hoping to find a vehicle on the quay.
Shala River boat trips from the lake
The Shala River is the most popular side trip from Lake Koman, reached by boat from the lake itself. Activities there include swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips, with lunch available at riverside guesthouses. Speedboat operators advertise reaching the Shala in around 20 minutes, which leaves more of the day on the river.
A Shala River tour is a different purchase from the ferry crossing, so check what is included before you pay. Some operators offer a full lake-and-Shala package with pickup, while others sell only the boat leg. If the Shala is the point of your day, book a service that names it explicitly.
One day or an overnight stay
The crossing can be done in a day from Tirana by leaving early, crossing the lake and returning the same evening. With more time you can add two or three days to explore Valbona, Theth or both. The day trip is long but workable; the overnight version is calmer and suits anyone continuing into the mountains.
The trade-off is between a tight timetable and a flexible one. A same-day return depends on making the evening transport back, while an overnight stop lets you absorb a late ferry or a delayed minibus. Decide which matters more before you reserve, because the answer changes which sailing you need.
Practical points on the day
Weather affects the crossing, and Komani Lake Ferry notes that journey length varies with conditions. Bring a light jacket even in summer, wear comfortable shoes for wet decks and keep valuables secure. Take your rubbish away with you.
Keep luggage manageable, since you will move between a vehicle, a landing and a boat. Parking can be reserved in advance at the lake, which helps if you are driving and leaving a car behind for the crossing. Our Fierzë port guide collects more on the far landing and onward transport if you want the fuller picture.
Should you take the car ferry or a speedboat?
Take the Berisha car ferry if you want the full Koman to Fierzë crossing and plan to continue to Valbona. Choose a speedboat or a Shala River tour if you want time on the river instead of a long transit. Book ahead in summer, arrive at the landing early, and confirm your pickup and departure times with Komani Lake Ferry when you reserve.
