Planning Berat sightseeing: castle first, then the old quarters
Berat's sights stack vertically: the castle sits on the hill, the Mangalem and Gorica quarters tumble below it, and the Osum river runs between them. Most of the walking is cobbled and steep, so the order you tackle things in matters as much as the list itself.
Start with the castle, the one place that draws real search demand and warrants half a day. It is paid, at 200–300 lek in cash only, and the Onufri Museum inside adds around an hour of painted interiors. From there, the smaller mosque and church stops sit along the climb, while Gorica lies across the seven-arch bridge, free to wander and quiet in a way Mangalem is not.

Berat Castle: Tickets, Opening Hours and What to See Inside
A walled citadel above Berat's old town, reached by a cobbled climb of 15 to 20 minutes. Allow two to three hours inside for the churches, the Onufri icon museum and views over the Osum valley.
half a day · 200–300 lek, cash only · Best for history and views on foot

Onufri Museum, Berat: What to See Inside the Icon Museum
Around 200 icons and liturgical objects from Berat's churches fill a historic church inside the castle quarter. The climb up through the gate is steep and cobbled, so arrive early and give the painted interior an unhurried hour.
60 minutes · Paid entry · Best for icon and church art lovers

Gorica Bridge, Berat: Visiting the Ottoman Stone Bridge
Seven stone arches built in 1780 carry pedestrians across the Osum between Mangalem and Gorica. Come for the view of Mangalem's stacked Ottoman houses, but watch your footing: the cobbled approaches are uneven, especially after rain.
20-30 minutes · free entry · Best for photographers and old-town walks

Gorica Quarter, Berat: What to See Across the Osum
The quieter bank of old Berat, reached over the seven-arch Gorica Bridge: cobbled lanes, stone houses and the 1864 Church of St. Spiridon, with a signed trail above the roofs to unmanaged ruins and the best view back over Mangalem.
2-3 hours, plus 1 hour for the ruins · no ticket for the quarter or the ruins · Best for quiet lanes and old-town views

Bachelors' Mosque, Berat: Visiting the Xhamia e Beqarëve
A small Ottoman mosque in the Mangalem lanes with 1920s frescoes inside, reached by climbing cobbled steps from the bazaar. It is an active place of worship, so access depends on whoever is there and modest dress is expected.
15-20 minutes · Best for walkers climbing to the castle

King's Mosque, Berat: Visiting the Xhamia e Mbretit
A working late-15th-century mosque in the Mangalem lanes, entered flush with the street so it is easy to walk past; inside, the painted ceiling and mihrab repay a quiet twenty minutes. No published hours, so ask locally on the day.
20-30 minutes · Free · Best for walkers exploring Mangalem's lanes

Lead Mosque, Berat: A Visitor's Guide to Xhamia e Plumbit
A 16th-century mosque in Mangalem, worth five minutes as a pause on the climb between the riverside and the castle, where the setting below the walls does most of the work. Don't count on getting inside.
5-10 minutes · Free · Best for walkers climbing to the castle

Church of St Michael, Berat: Visiting Kisha e Shën Mëhillit
A small 14th-century Orthodox church on a steep rock outside Kalaja's lanes, whose windows frame the Osum river far below. It is easy to mistake for the Holy Trinity Church on the postcards, so check which one you mean before climbing.
60 minutes · free entry · Best for castle circuit with river views

Holy Trinity Church, Berat: Visiting the Castle Church
A small domed Byzantine church on a grassy hill within Berat Castle's walls, reached by steep zigzag steps. The doors are usually locked, so plan your visit around the cross-plan exterior and the river view.
20-30 minutes · Best for castle visitors and architecture fans

Ethnographic Museum Berat: What to See Inside the House
A two-storey 18th-century Berat house whose courtyard, çardak and carved ceilings matter as much as the collection. The ground floor recreates the medieval bazaar; upstairs are furnished 18th- and 19th-century rooms. The cobbled climb is steep, so wear grippy shoes.
around an hour · Best for understanding traditional Berat house life
What costs nothing in Berat
Several of Berat's stops cost nothing at all. Entry to the Church of St Michael is free, though it opens only from 9 am to 1 pm. The Gorica Bridge, the Gorica Quarter with its signed trail above the roofs, the King's Mosque and the Lead Mosque also carry no entry charge. The Lead Mosque is little more than a five-minute pause below the walls, and the King's Mosque asks only that you respect prayer times.
The castle is the exception: budget 200–300 lek, cash only. If you are watching costs, pair the free church and bridge with a slow walk through Gorica rather than adding more paid interiors.
One day in Berat: what to prioritise
With a single day, give the castle two to three hours and include the Onufri Museum, whose roughly 200 icons justify the steep, cobbled climb through the gate. Arrive early, as the climb alone takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Then cross the Gorica Bridge on foot. The 20–30 minute walk gives the classic view back over Mangalem's stacked houses. If time remains, add the Gorica Quarter, allowing 2–3 hours for lanes and views, or an hour for its trail above the roofs.
