Çorovodë is a small town in the Skrapar region, south of Berat, and it is the practical base for the Osum Canyon rather than a sight in itself. Buses from Berat reach it in about 45 minutes, and the drive south on the SH72 takes 30 to 45 minutes. This guide covers how to get there, what the town and gorge each offer, how long to allow and which parts need a car or an organised tour.

What and where Çorovodë is

Çorovodë sits in the Skrapar highlands, 20 to 30 km south of Berat, where the road begins to follow the Osum River towards the canyon. The town has a main square, and it works as the last place to sort out local transport before the gorge itself. Treat it as a staging point: the canyon is the destination, and the town is where the bus from Berat ends.

Many visitors conflate the two, but Çorovodë and the Osum Canyon are separate places. The canyon stretches for roughly 13 km, with walls rising 50 to 80 metres above the water in places, and the most dramatic sections are reached from points along the road that runs beside it. If you want the full picture of the gorge before you commit to a day, the Osumi Canyon guide covers the layout and access.

How to get to Çorovodë from Berat: bus and car

By public transport, buses from Berat run to Çorovodë in about 45 minutes. No direct bus continues into the canyon itself, so from Çorovodë you arrange local transport on the spot or walk to the nearest access points. That last stretch is the part to plan for, because the bus gets you to town but not to the viewpoints.

The Osum Canyon from Çorovodë: viewpoints, rafting and swimming

Sponsored

The road from Berat to Çorovodë passes close to the canyon edge at several points, and short walks from the roadside lead to overlooks into the gorge. Organised rafting trips typically depart from near the village of Çorovoda and cover several kilometres of the navigable sections. If you would rather stay dry, the rim viewpoints give you the drama without a boat.

Swimming follows the water level rather than a fixed season. By late July and August the river drops considerably, which makes the rafting gentler and opens up natural pools and wading routes through the shallower sections. Earlier in the summer the water is higher, so plan your swimming around what the river is doing when you arrive.

How long to spend in Çorovodë

Give the canyon a half day at minimum and a full day if you want rafting, a canyon walk and stops at several viewpoints. The town itself needs little time beyond sorting transport and having a look around the main square. A half day works for a quick viewpoint run; a full day suits anyone combining the gorge with the drive down and back.

If you are building the day around Berat, keep the rest of the circuit light. Çorovodë pairs naturally with the gorge and not much else on the same afternoon, while longer days out of Berat also take in Apollonia, Byllis or Mount Tomorr. Planning Berat sightseeing around the castle and old quarters is a separate day in its own right. For the practical details, see the Mount Tomorr.

Rafting season and water levels on the Osum

Spring, roughly April to June, gives the best water levels for rafting and the most dramatic canyon scenery, with waterfalls running over the rim after rainfall. Organised trips run the navigable sections of the river, and departure arrangements and prices vary, so ask when you book rather than budgeting from an old figure.

Doing Çorovodë without a car: organised tours

Without a car, an organised tour from Berat is the practical option: it provides transport and a guided visit to the canyon's highlights, including stops at the best viewpoints and swimming spots. This solves the gap between the bus stop in Çorovodë and the canyon access points. Compare what each tour includes before you commit, since the driving and the stops vary.

Combining Çorovodë with the wider Berat day-trip circuit

The canyon day is the natural partner for time in Berat itself, and it sits in a region with several other outings within about an hour's drive. Bogova Waterfall, around 20 km east of Berat, takes two to three hours and works well as a lighter alternative if the river is high or you want shade. The Bogovë Waterfall guide sets out the access and timing.

Mount Tomorr, about 25 km east of Berat, is a full-day outing, and Byllis, 65 km south, needs two to three hours at the site. Apollonia, 60 km west, takes three to four hours and is the easiest add-on for anyone based in Berat for several days. Pick one of these per day rather than stacking them; the Mount Tomorr guide covers the mountain in more detail.

Practical points: the road, side roads and clearance

Sponsored

The SH72 is the signed route south, and the canyon access points sit along the road that runs parallel to the gorge. Side roads to individual access points and parking areas are rougher, so a car with reasonable clearance is the safer choice. Fuel and supplies are easiest to sort in Berat before you leave.

Check the current bus arrangements and any tour availability with your accommodation in Berat before setting out, since these change with the season. In the canyon, stay on marked paths near the rim and take local advice on swimming spots when the river is running high.

Should Çorovodë be your canyon day?

Yes, if you want the Osum Canyon: Çorovodë is where the bus from Berat ends and where rafting trips start, so it earns its place as the gateway rather than the highlight. Go by car on the SH72 if you want viewpoint stops at your own pace, or book a tour from Berat if you would rather not bridge the gap from town to gorge yourself. Either way, give it a half day at least and check the water level before you pack a swimsuit.
