Gjirokastër attractions: castle first, then the old town

Gjirokastër stacks its sights up a hillside: the castle sits above the old town, the bazaar and its 1757 mosque lie below, and the tower houses are reached on foot over steep cobbles. That shape decides how a day here works, because the climbing is as much a part of the visit as the buildings.

Start high. Gjirokastra Castle needs two to three hours for the clock tower, the prison cells, the weapons collection and the recovered US jet, and its winter gate shuts at 17:00. From there the Cold War Tunnel is a 20-minute walk through an 800 m bunker of 59 bare rooms, entered beside the Municipality building — easy to miss, so watch for it.

Some of the best moments cost only the climb. The Obelisk of Education is free above the bazaar, a steep 30 to 60 minutes of walking with slate rooftops spread out below; go early or late rather than at midday. Entry prices at the Ismail Kadare House aren't published, so bring cash and ask at the door.

For the tower houses, Skenduli House keeps 1823 painted ceilings, original furnishings and four hamams across twelve rooms, and Zekate House climbs from storerooms to a frescoed reception room. Both mean steep cobbles and cash at the door. Antigonea, out in the hills, takes half a day with the 40-minute drive each way.

Climbing for nothing above the bazaar

The Obelisk of Education asks only for the walk: a steep haul up from the bazaar to a monument to education and the Albanian language, with rooftops and slate roofs below. Budget 30 to 60 minutes, and pick early or late to dodge the midday heat.

Looking at the Bazaar Mosque among the shopfronts and timber houses of the Old Bazaar takes minutes, and asking at the door costs nothing if it happens to be open that day.

Where to sort entry before you set out

Antigonea is the one to arrange ahead: a guided trip costs €90 per person with the entrance fee included, and the half-day commitment plus 40 minutes of driving each way makes a spontaneous visit awkward. The Cold War Tunnel also benefits from booking, at 200 lek a person, about €2.

The castle, Skenduli House and Zekate House are paid but need no reservation, so carry cash for the door. At the Ismail Kadare House, entry prices aren't published, so bring cash and ask.
