Butrint Tours: Guided Visits, Day Trips and How to Choose
Compare ways to see Butrint: guided tours from Sarandë, combined day trips to Ksamil and the Blue Eye, or the bus and taxi, with entry fees and timings.
On this page
Choose a guided tour if you want the monuments explained and the transport solved; go independently if you want three hours in the ruins rather than ninety minutes. This guide breaks the market into three: guided visits to the archaeological site, combined day trips from Sarandë that bundle in Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Lëkurësi Castle, and summer boat trips to outlying monuments. It also covers entry fees, the museum's separate hours and the bus and taxi fares, so you can judge whether a tour earns its price.
What a Butrint tour actually covers
Almost every tour sells the same core: the walled archaeological site inside Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the southern tip of Albania, about 17km south of Sarandë and 5km south of Ksamil. Inside, the main monuments are the Ancient Theatre, the Great Basilica, the Baptistery, the Lion's Gate and Lake Gate, the Roman Villa or Triconch Palace, Asclepius's Sanctuary, and the Venetian castle on the acropolis. The site sits beside the Vivari Channel, with Corfu visible across the water.
The museum is the part tours often skip. It sits in the castle on the acropolis, and the Butrint Foundation gives it separate hours from the site, so a guide who walks you past the walls without going in leaves the finds unexamined. If the museum matters to you, say so before booking and check the day's opening with the ticket office.

Guided tour or self-guided visit
A licensed guide adds context that panels cannot: how the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers stack up, and why the site's position above the channel mattered. Albania has a national guiding qualification, and the guides listed for the park on tourHQ describe themselves as licensed or certified national guides working in English. Booking through a platform gives you profiles and reviews but not a fixed price, so ask for a quote for your date and group size.
Self-guided works well here. The Butrint Foundation says the site is well provided with information panels explaining the history and individual monuments, and that guidebooks are on sale at the ticket booth, and you can ask for a guide at the entrance. That flexibility suits anyone who wants to linger at the Baptistery or the theatre rather than keep to a group's pace. Allow about three hours for the archaeological site and museum together.

Combined day trips from Sarandë
The most common packaged option is a loop out of Sarandë that treats Butrint as one stop among four. Albania Turism's listing for its Butrint, Ksamil, Blue Eye and Lëkurësi Castle tour runs six hours, priced from €71, with hotel pick-up, a certified guide, entrance tickets and air-conditioned transport included. The advertised split is 1.5 hours guided at Butrint, 30 minutes at Ksamil, an hour at the Blue Eye with a 1.2km walking path, and 30 minutes at Lëkurësi Castle for views over the Ionian Sea towards Corfu.
That itinerary is efficient and thin at once: you see four places in a day, but 90 minutes at Butrint covers the headline monuments and little else. For a first visit with limited time it is a reasonable trade, especially with tickets and transport handled. If the ruins are the reason you came, book a site-only guide or travel independently and give Butrint a half-day or more.
Boat trips to Ali Pasha's Castle
In summer, local fishermen run boat services from the Butrint area to isolated monuments such as Ali Pasha's Castle, according to the Butrint Foundation, which dates the season to June to September. This is not a scheduled ferry with a published timetable; it is a seasonal service arranged on the ground, so treat any quoted departure as an enquiry rather than a booking. The castle sits across the Vivari Channel, and the crossing itself is part of the appeal.
Getting there by bus, taxi or car
The bus from Sarandë to Butrint terminates at the park, so you cannot overshoot. The Butrint Foundation puts the journey at about 45 minutes for 100 lek (about 1 euro); a more recent account reports roughly half an hour and 200 lek from Sarandë, 100 lek from Butrint to Ksamil and 150 lek from Ksamil to Sarandë, with half-hourly summer buses from around 6.30am to 8pm. Fares are paid in cash to a conductor on board, so carry small notes.
A taxi from Sarandë to Butrint costs about 1,400 lek or 10 euros, the Butrint Foundation reports, and it advises agreeing the return trip with the same driver because taxis are scarce at the site. Driving is straightforward along SH81, but parking is the catch: the free car park by the entrance is small and fills early, and queues build along the approach road within an hour of opening. Arriving at opening time is the practical answer; the bus avoids the problem altogether.
Tickets, opening hours and the museum
The Butrint Foundation lists admission at 300 lek for Albanian citizens, 700 lek for other nationals and 500 lek for other nationals in groups of 10 or more, with the main site open all year from 8am until dusk and the museum in the Acropolis castle open 9am to 4pm. Treat these as the published rates and hours rather than a live check; confirm at the ticket booth or with your tour operator before you travel. The gap between the two closing patterns is the practical detail: the museum shuts in the afternoon well before dusk.
How long to allow
Budget about three hours inside the park for the site and museum, add 30 to 45 minutes each way from Sarandë by bus or car, and you have a half-day before you count waiting for transport. From Ksamil, 4km away, the same visit fits more comfortably around a morning. The Butrint map is worth opening before you go, because the site is large and the gates and monuments are not laid out in a single line.
Choosing between the options
Take a combined day trip if you have one day, no car and want Ksamil, the Blue Eye and Lëkurësi Castle as well as the ruins; the 90-minute stop is the price of seeing four places. For a site-only visit with the monuments explained, the guides listed for the park on tourHQ describe themselves as licensed or certified national guides working in English. Go by bus or taxi if you would rather move at your own pace with the panels, guidebook and museum for company. Cheaper fares and entry fees make the independent day the lower-cost choice, but you carry the timing and the parking risk yourself.
Which Butrint option suits your day?
If you have a single day in Sarandë, a combined tour solves transport and tickets in one booking and shows you four places before dinner; accept that Butrint gets about 90 minutes. If the archaeological site and museum are the point of the trip, travel independently or book a site-only guide and give the park a full half-day. Check current entry fees and museum hours at the ticket office before you set out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a guide to visit Butrint?
No. The site has information panels explaining the history and individual monuments, guidebooks are sold at the ticket booth, and you can ask for a guide at the entrance. A licensed guide adds context and interpretation, which matters most if you want the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers explained as you walk.
Are entrance tickets included in Butrint tours?
It depends on the operator. The Albania Turism day trip lists all entrance tickets among its inclusions, but other tours and private guides may quote the guiding fee only, with site admission paid separately. Ask before booking and check the current fee at the ticket booth.
Can I visit Ali Pasha's Castle from Butrint?
In summer, local fishermen run boat services to isolated monuments such as Ali Pasha's Castle, with the season given as June to September. These are informal seasonal services rather than a scheduled ferry, so arrange the crossing locally and agree the return before you set off.
