Kadiut Bridge is a single-arch stone bridge over the Langarica River at Bënjë, near Përmet in southern Albania, and it needs about half an hour of your day unless you carry on into the canyon or down to the thermal baths. The bridge stands at the mouth of Langarica Canyon, so most people treat it as the start of a longer wander rather than a standalone stop. This guide covers what the structure is, the drive from Përmet, the walk alternative, how long to allow, and how to slot it into a plan built around our Përmet: a Practical Guide to Albania's Vjosa Valley Town.

What the Kadiut Bridge is and where it stands

The bridge crosses the Langarica River beside the village of Bënjë, near Përmet, and it is also written as Ura e Katiut, translated as Judge's Bridge. It is described as a stone and limestone structure with one main arch and a small side window, around 30 metres long and 7 metres high.

A local legend holds that a judge was thrown from the top of the bridge, which is where the alternative name comes from; it is a story attached to the site, not a recorded event.

Ottoman-era stonework: the arch, the side window and the setting over the Langarica River

Come for the fabric of the thing: a single span in stone and limestone, with the narrow side opening that marks this style of Ottoman-era bridge building. The Langarica River runs beneath it, and the combination of arch, water and the cliff walls beyond is what makes the short stop worthwhile.

The bridge sits at the entrance to Langarica Canyon, so the view from the deck looks straight into the gorge rather than back across open farmland. Photographers do best early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light falls into the valley rather than over the rim. Clear days give the sharpest views of the rock walls, while rain leaves the paths around the bridge and the baths slippery.

The bridge as the entrance to Langarica Canyon and the Bënjë thermal baths

The bridge is the natural gateway to two other things: the canyon path beyond it and the Banjat e Bënjës springs nearby, where naturally heated mineral water feeds the pools. Most visitors pair the bridge with the baths because they sit within a short walk of each other, and the ground between them is uneven rather than a paved promenade.

If the water is the main reason for your day out, plan around our guide to the Benja thermal baths, Përmet and allow time to change and sit rather than treating the pools as a five-minute photo stop. The canyon beyond the bridge is a separate outing in its own right; see Langarica Canyon, Përmet for what the gorge involves.

Getting there by car from Përmet: the drive, the parking area and the final approach

By car, follow the signs from Përmet towards Bënjë and continue until you reach the village; the bridge is then a short drive on from Bënjë, with parking near the bridge. There is a parking area near the bridge, but spaces may be limited, so approach slowly through the village and leave the car in a safe spot rather than stopping on the road.

A direct taxi gives you more flexibility to set off at your own pace, and drivers should be told you are heading for the Kadiut Bridge at Bënjë. Treat any quoted fare as a guide rather than a fixed tariff.

Getting there without a car: bus to Bënjë, then the walk to the bridge

Without a car, take a local bus from Përmet to Bënjë, which leaves from the main bus station in Përmet. From Bënjë, the bridge is about a 3 km walk taking 30 to 40 minutes along the road, and the bridge comes into view as you approach the Langarica River.

A taxi from Bënjë to the bridge covers the last stretch more quickly than walking. Treat any quoted fare as a guide rather than a fixed tariff and agree the price before you set off.

How long you need at the bridge and around it

Give the bridge itself 20 to 30 minutes: enough to walk the deck, look into the canyon and take photographs from both banks. The time that changes the shape of the day is everything around it, because the walk from Bënjë, the canyon mouth and the pools at Bënja each add their own stretch.

A realistic half-day is the drive from Përmet, the bridge, a spell at the thermal baths and the drive back; a full day is that plus time inside the canyon. If you are on foot and relying on the bus, the 30 to 40 minute walk from the village each way is the part that sets your schedule, so build the return leg into your plans before you set out.

When to go: light, crowds and slippery paths after rain

Early morning and late afternoon give the best light and the thinnest crowds at the bridge. Clear weather also gives the sharpest view of the surrounding rock, and rain makes the paths around the bridge and the baths slippery, so grippy footwear matters more than usual after a wet spell.

This is a river valley with its own weather, so check conditions and current prices or dates with the Banjat e Bënjës thermal baths before committing to the canyon. Përmet's sky does not reflect what is happening at Bënjë.

What to wear and bring for uneven ground by the river

Wear comfortable shoes with decent tread: the terrain around the bridge and the thermal baths is uneven, and the riverbank is not a maintained path. Bring water, a hat in summer and a camera, since the composition of arch, water and gorge is the reason most people stop.

A picnic by the riverbank works well if you are self-sufficient, and it removes the need to time your visit around a kitchen. Food in Përmet is worth saving room for on the way back, and our Përmet Food guide covers the local specialities to look out for.

The two obvious add-ons are the thermal baths at Bënja and the canyon that opens up beyond the bridge. Both sit close enough to the bridge that you can combine them in one outing, but the ground is rough and the canyon demands more time than the pools.

Back in Përmet, the town itself fills out the rest of the day with its bazaar street and riverside setting, and the drive north towards Tepelenë puts another Ottoman-era town within reach if you are touring the valley.

Where Kadiut Bridge fits in a Përmet itinerary

Treat the bridge as a half-day anchor rather than a day filler: pair it with the thermal baths in the morning, return to Përmet for a late lunch, and use the afternoon for the town. That sequencing keeps you off the road during the hottest part of a summer day and leaves the canyon for a separate visit if you want to do it properly.

If you are basing yourself in Përmet for several days, the bridge, the baths and the canyon are close enough to spread across two outings instead of cramming them together. Our round-up of the best restaurants in Permet is the practical way to end the day once you are back in town.

Bridge, baths or both?

If you have one free half-day in Përmet, drive to Bënjë, park near the bridge, spend half an hour on the arch and the canyon view, then give the rest of the time to the thermal baths. Skip the car and the 3 km walk from the village each way becomes the day's main event, which is fine in cool weather but punishing in high summer.
